Off The Beaten Track: Guatemala

Tikal, Guatemala

This strikingly beautiful country of fiery volcanoes, enigmatic ruins and vibrant craft markets draws far fewer tourists than the Caribbean or Mexico, keeping hotel prices low and potentially blockbuster tourist sites crowd-free, even in high season.

To experience the best of Guatemala, we recommend taking time to savor the elegant colonial city of Antigua, the otherworldly beauty of volcano-ringed Lake Atitlán and the grandeur of atmospheric Tikal.

Non-stop flights from Dallas, Houston, Miami and a handful of other U.S. cities make reaching these wonders surprisingly easy, and Harper-recommended boutique hotels ensure members lodge in total comfort.

Maialino Restaurant, New York

Maialino Restaurant
While in New York, we had a chance to re-visit Maialino, the latest venture by Danny Meyer, the gifted restaurateur whose empire includes Union Square Café, Gramercy Tavern and The Modern. Maialino goes back to Meyer’s love of Italian food, and here you’ll find his take on that beloved Italian institution, the trattoria. Handsomely set on Gramercy Park in a corner of the Gramercy Park Hotel, Maialino has a lively front bar area for casual eating, and a slightly more formal main dining room with linen covered tables. The wide selection of salumi (Italian charcuterie) presents several possibilities for starters, or you can just order the grande selezione (much of this is sourced right in New York). The antipasti range from tripe to a dandelion green salad, but our favorite is the plate of fried artichokes with a lively anchovy dipping sauce. Among the many pastas, our favorites have been the tonnarelli with sharp pecorino cheese and black pepper, and the house special, malfatti (“badly made”) pasta with a suckling-pig ragu draped with fresh arugula. Among the main courses, do not miss the rich oxtails (which are enough for two). Lunch is especially pleasant with the sun pouring in the big park-facing windows. Reservations are a must, but you can walk in for a seat at the bar. 2 Lexington Avenue. Tel. 212-777-2410.

From the Harper Travel Office: Upcoming Events in April

Henri Cartier-Bresson

On the Banks of the Marne, 1938,” Henri Cartier-Bresson (French, 1908-2004) Juvisy, France. 1938 Gelatin silver print, printed 1947, 9 1/8×13 11/16” (23.3×34.8 cm), The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Gift of the photographer

APRIL 11: The first major exhibition of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s arresting photography in 30 years opens at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). This retrospective encompasses Cartier-Bresson’s entire career, including works recording China during the revolution, the Soviet Union after Stalin’s death, India at the time of independence and a modernizing post-World War II Europe. After the exhibition closes June 28, it moves to Chicago’s Art Institute (July 24-October 3).

APRIL 18: Soak up some small-town California charm along with world-class guacamole at the Fallbrook Avocado Festival, an easy drive from Harper Alliance hotels in La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe and Laguna Beach. In addition to strolling among the 300-some food, craft and art vendors, festival attendees can enjoy cooking demonstrations, performances and quirky competitions such as the “Avocado 500,” a race of model cars constructed primarily from this surprisingly versatile fruit.

APRIL 21: On this day in 753 B.C., according to legend, Romulus founded what would become one of the greatest cities in the ancient world. Starting April 10, Romans proudly celebrate the birthday of their city with parades, banquets, gladiatorial exhibitions and even a “Goddess of Rome” beauty contest, but the festivities culminate on April 21, when the Aventine Hill glows with innumerable candles and the Tiber shimmers with a spectacular fireworks display.

Centre Pompidou, Metz, France

Centre Pompidou

We suspect that the cultural event of the year in France will be the opening of the new branch of the Centre Pompidou in the eastern French city of Metz. Located near the city’s imposing German-built train station (from 1871-1914, this part of La Lorraine was German-occupied), the striking new building with a canopy roof by architects Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines will be a large hexagonal structure comprised of three main galleries that will house regularly changing exhibits. The museum opening is part of the French government’s desire to decentralize the country’s cultural structures from Paris. For more information, click here.

From the Harper Members' Forum: Post Ranch Inn, California

Post Ranch Inn

“After all the hype, my fiance and I were very excited for a celebratory weekend at Post Ranch. It was a wonderful destination and we highly recommend the trip. We stayed in a beautiful Pacific Suite that had 200+-degree view of the Pacific. It had an amazing bathroom and a woodburning fireplace (both a must for the prices you pay).

Only critique is the spa. If you go to Post Ranch, skip spending/wasting money at the spa and go on a picnic hike or take one of the locally provided Lexus cars for a spin on the PCH.

Also, we had a terrific dining experience and sat in on a chef’s demo on Saturday morning. The staff were very approachable and helped with every aspect of our stay.”

Château Les Crayères, Reims, France

Les Crayères Chef

For many years, we’ve enjoyed Les Crayères, an elegant hotel in a Belle Epoque-vintage limestone mansion surrounded by a magnificent park on the edge of Reims, the Champagne capital of France. We still fondly remember several outstanding meals there when the dining room had three Michelin stars under the auspices of chef Gérard Boyer, now retired. Most recently, the hotel’s chef has been Didier Elena, who previously worked for Alain Ducasse in New York City and whom we frankly never found to be quite in his element here. Why? Elena’s a talented cook, but his nervy modern French cooking never seemed to provide the appropriate culinary backdrop against which to sample the local wines. Now Les Crayères has an ambitious new general manager, Hervé Fort, and a new chef, Philippe Mille, 35,who has a very impressive resume and who was most recently second to Yannick Alléno at the three-star dining room of Le Meurice in Paris. On the basis of a recent lunch, Les Crayères has made an excellent choice, too. We opted for the “Menu Gourmet,” which will change according to the seasons, and started with a wonderful hors d’oeuvre of boiled beef salad with horseradish cream and a beignet filled with cornichons (tiny pickles) and capers. Next came an elegant king crab salad with avocado purée, salad leaves and citrus emulsion, then John Dory with a light seaweed sauce and a garnish of conch and razor-shell clams, both of which were delicious and beautifully presented. The best course of the meal followed: Bresse chicken breast that had been slow-cooked for hours and was served with a black truffle sauce and a garnish of pasta with black truffle shavings, a dish that showed off Mille’s well-drilled gastronomic classicism and preference for luxurious simplicity. We next sampled a 2-year-old Comté cheese from maître fromager Bernard Antony in Alsace, and finished with an elegant dessert of velvety vanilla biscuit with cappuccino cream, the grand finale to a truly excellent meal. The amiable sommelier served us a different Champagne with each course, and on the basis of this luxurious lunch, we happily predict that Les Crayères is destined for major gastronomic honors in the very near future.
