Harper Member Trip Report: Italy

Hotel Caruso

Hotel Caruso

The following was submitted to the Harper Travel Office regarding a trip to Italy last fall:

“Our trip was great due in large part to your assistance. Thanks again. Absolute Italy was first class. We had the same driver for our three bookings with them, and the guides for the Vatican and Pompeii were great. Our driver, Fernando, was a really good guy and we enjoyed his company. We would request their services without hesitation.

As I said before, the Hotel Caruso is an outstanding property. There are three high-end hotels along the cliff in Ravello (Sasso and Palumbo being the others), but the Caruso is clearly in its own league. Great room, great service, great food, great pool, etc. The JW Marriott in Capri was also a very nice venue and we enjoyed our time in Capri.

The Villa Franca in Positano had a very warm, welcoming staff, but the rooms are small (but also considerably less expensive).

The Rose Garden Palace in Rome was in a great neighborhood and within walking distance to a number of Rome attractions. The room was spacious, and compared to the prices at other Rome venues, this was a very good deal. The fact they arranged a driver to pick up at the airport in Rome was also a very appreciated touch. It’s just down the street from the Excelsior and Hotel Eden and Via Veneto.

We enjoyed our meal at Aldo’s place. Sorry we missed your call, but with a 6-year-old you tend to eat a little earlier than the rest of Italy.

If we had it to do all over again, we would trade our time in Positano for more time in Capri and Ravello. Positano may be more well known but it certainly isn’t nearly as enjoyable as Capri and Ravello.” J.L.

Restaurant Update: The Crosby Bar, New York

Crosby Street BarThe restaurant in the wonderfully designed Crosby Street Hotel, the first overseas venture by Firmdale Hotels (whose popular London properties include the Covent Garden Hotel, the Haymarket Hotel and the Knightsbridge Hotel), is an intimate space with stained-oak floors; banquettes covered with bright striped fabric; a long, pewter-topped bar; and views onto the hotel’s two gardens. (One is in a courtyard; the other occupies a lovely little urban sanctuary formed by the walls of adjoining buildings and separated from the street by a beautifully wrought metal railing.) The restaurant features a casual menu with starters such as a fine Caesar salad, lobster-corn bisque and a luscious Asian-style duck roll. Main courses include a juicy chicken breast, a perfectly cooked sea bass fillet, and a big bowl of rigatoni with a rich oxtail ragu. Among the sides, the spinach and the Brussels sprouts with bacon are particularly good. The dessert not to miss is the warm chocolate bread pudding, a perfect balance of bitter and sweet. Full afternoon tea is served as well. We confidently predict that the restaurant and bar will quickly establish themselves as SoHo musts. 79 Crosby Street. Tel. (212) 226-6400. Average meal per person, excluding beverages, $50.

Travel Office News from Botswana and South Africa

Chiefs Camp LeopardTravel consultant Della returned last month from a spectacular two-week trip to  Botswana and South Africa, which included stays at  Chief’s Camp and  The Saxon. Although this was her fourth safari, Della marveled how the “vast, open landscapes” and the “incredible diversity of wildlife” continue to amaze her trip after trip. She keeps returning to Africa, she says, because a vacation there “takes you right back in time. This is where man came from, and the landscapes haven’t changed in thousands of years. Somehow you just feel at one with the world.”

Joyce Hotel, Paris

The Joyce HotelWith Paris hotel rates going through the roof, we’re always in search of small, charming, good-value hotels in the French capital. Knowing this, a Parisian friend recently recommended the new hotel Joyce in the 9th arrondissement, and during a quick stop in Paris, we checked in for a night and liked it very much. To be sure, this pleasant, well-run property isn’t a luxury hotel by any remote stretch of the imagination, but falls instead into the category of hotel that the French themselves like very much when they visit Paris — hotel de charme, or places with real personality. Personality or not, the Joyce is air-conditioned and has complimentary wireless Internet service, major pluses in our book, and our room was spacious, quiet, light and attractively decorated with a good mix of traditional elements such as great molding, and contemporary ones, like modern floor lamps and armchairs. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful, and breakfast in their clerestory-ceilinged dining room was a pleasure, with excellent croissants, good coffee and smiling service. Oh, and the price — $240 a night.
